Beginning to believe it himself, Ivan feels worse than he had when he actually committed the crimes. Jakožto dobrý taktik byl Gilbert pro své zkušenosti z předešlých válek poslán mladším bratrem na Východní frontu. Byt' se situace zdála slibná a k vítězství netrvalo dlouho, Ruský medvěd nikdy nepadne . Gilbert tak ztrácí veškerou kontrolu nad válkou a posléze i vlastní svobodou, kdy se jako Ivanova velkolepá trofej začlení mezi tehdy mocný Sovětský svaz. Pro něj tak začíná etapa života plná nočních můr.
