In countries where the welfare state regulates everything, this kind of coexistence and mutual help no longer exists. In Egypt they are the order of the day. My husband Mahmoud is telling me these stories, when we are sitting together in the evening smoking Shisha and drinking tea. They are simple stories - written down as far as possible in his own words to keep them unadulterated and authentical. The names of the protagonists are changed because of privacy.
