So when Dakota catches the eye of Sam Carter, and his mission is to steal Dakota's virginity and break her heart, things for both Dakota and Sam don't go their way. It doesn't take many years for the SGC to realize that whether it's being lost in time or space that there is a very real possibility for people to not have an easy way home. Therefore they create five phases of being lost. Phases one and two mean you'd definitely return to Earth if possible while four and five mean you don't have to without consequence.
