A young boy watches the clock tick until it strike midnight. This young boy lost the person he cared the most, his elder sister. Tonight, when the clock strike midnight, and Samhain is upon the village, he will finally have the answer to his lifelong question. This is the backstory of an Original Character of mine called Gabzryel David Summerfield, from my novel trilogy, The Shadow Paradigm. I wrote this after seeing an Halloween marathon, filled with gory movies. I don't know what is the fascination with the modern and violent way of seeing Halloween; few seem to remember the original meaning of Halloween. For those familiar with Celtic folklore, Halloween, or Samhain, was the day when the veil between our world and the spirit worlds opened, and the spirit of those who died could once more walk upon the land that they used to know. I was always fascinated by this Celtic's belief; I found it bittersweet that spirits could, for one day each year, visit their families and give them a sign that everything was allright in the spirit world. Of course, there were a few evil spirits, but nothing like the modern world spread as the norm. There were no evil Leprechauns, or Gremlins, or Halloween creatures. Just dead members of families who crossed the veil to visit their family and say "Hi!". So, just to break the new tradition of Halloween stories, here is my take on the original meaning of the Samhain Holiday. And, of course, the explanation of one of the motives behind Gabzryel's eccentric life.

'The Passing Bell', ONC2022 The Passing Bell" is based on Prompt 62: The old man you've been taking care of at the hospital has passed on. And in their will, you've been given their Wiltshire mansion. It's your first day in the house but something seems off; and, Prompt 65: You were told if you find a bell in the woods to never ring it, or you will be cursed! While hiking deep in the forest, you-literally-stumble across a bell. The title comes my checking on the use of bells in England in older times. Bells gave information. i.e., summoning to church, or announcing a death (knell). A passing bell was rung to call a curate to a person about to die. The death bell was rung when the person died. The funeral bell (formerly lych or corpse bell) was rung for the funeral. Two bells appear in this story: Hydd's bell, and St. Duncan's bell. April Waverly cared for Drew Ramsey the last few years of his life. He leaves her his Wiltshire farm, Oakton, in his will. However, there are conditions: 1) she must live at Oakton continuously until Ostara; 2) she may not marry or have a relationship until the month after Ostara; 3) Ramsey's religfious group, the Pelham Druids, must be allowed to worship at the King's Oak until Ostara; 3) she must attend the seasonal festivals of the Pelham druids until Ostara in place of Drew; and, 4) she must maintain Oakton as is until Ostara.

This is the first in a trilogy of Halloween/Samhain stories with the same main character, Brenda, who is thirteen at the time this story takes place. The second story in the trilogy is "The Air Siren," which takes place ten years later. The third story in the trilogy is "The Gate Crasher," which takes place almost three years after the events of "The Air Siren."

This piece isn't fiction, though it speaks in the voice of story. It's a remembrance - for a people, a language, and a landscape that survived centuries of conquest and silence. My bloodline traces through those hills and borders, through families who lost their homes, their words, and their songs - yet somehow kept the flame alive. Celtic culture has too often been turned into costume, myth into merchandise. This writing is my way of giving it back its heartbeat. Every name, every god, every season we once marked with fire still belongs to us. May this be read not as bitterness, but as love - fierce, remembering love. For those who were silenced, and for those still learning to speak again. We are not relics. We are flame. And the flame still speaks our names.
