Big Wave Surfing is one of the most dangerous sports. And it's exactly what my best friends are chasing. As Mavericks fired this week, San Diego received its own swell bringing surf up to 9-10 feet in certain spots. When Surfline read 4-6 feet in Del Mar, it seemed realistic for both my skilled brother and my intermediate self. Then I found myself caught in one of the worst positions as a surfer- on the inside of a wave's break. Thrown by an outlier set, I feared drowning for the first time in my 20 years of life. This is my account of that set and the breakdown of my water abilities.
