Memories aren't cheap in the world of the Grid, where Sable Huntris makes a living copying and selling the Kycenan elites' memories of the sunlight and fresh air to the residents of the underworld. Astrid Grace Morningstar, one of Hollywood's megastars, sees the injection as a way to keep her looking young and beautiful forever. Dr Levinsten hasn't tested this treatment on humans yet; he was thrilled that Astrid wanted to be one of the first to obtain this new treatment. Astrid's parents don't trust this unknown world. When they heard that their daughter would become the first immortal, they feared the worst. They tried to stop Astrid but discover she has already had the injection. Soon after, Dr Levinsten himself mysteriously vanishes along with his treatment. Astrid finds herself the only living immortal in a word of mortals. Instead of making her even more rich and famous, she finds that being immortal is immensely difficult. Ultimately, she is forced to go into hiding, as there are many that want her dead; some through jealousy and others wanting the treatment for themselves. Her close relationships fall apart. Her career collapses, and she becomes the most hunted woman on earth. In the end, she takes her own life.
