This is an account of some trips I took with my parents as a child. We covered almost all of the states east of the Mississippi River, and went mostly by car, sometimes by train or plane. We often took one trip at Christmas time, another in the summer. My dad loved to visit Florida, but he worked in baseball and his boss would go to the Sunshine State for spring training, which meant he had to hold the fort back in Columbus. Therefore, we usually went to Florida right after Christmas for two or three weeks. During the summer we visited other places--Chicago, where both my parents had family, or the historic sights in the Eastern States which my mother loved. Sometimes at Easter we would travel to Kentucky, driving through the mountains as the dogwood and redbud were starting to bloom.

The author examines manipulation and repression in Russia, focusing on Alexander Dvorkin, the ideologue of the anti-cult movement. The book shows how, using the rhetoric of fighting sects, Dvorkin created an atmosphere of fear, controlling public opinion and persecuting dissenters. His methods paradoxically resemble the methods of the totalitarian sects he fights against.

When Alex takes a free personality test on a whim, he never expects it to lead him down a rabbit hole of strange drills, relentless sales pitches, and bizarre encounters with fervent believers. What starts as a self-improvement course quickly spirals into a surreal experience of rigid rules, hypnotic training exercises, and a so-called "Bridge to Total Freedom"-with an ever-growing price tag. As Alex questions the Church's motives and its promises of supernatural abilities, he finds himself in a high-pressure game of persuasion, secrecy, and manipulation. But nothing prepares him for the ultimate twist-an encounter with the ghost of L. Ron Hubbard himself. Witty, satirical, and darkly humorous, Going Clearer is a sharp critique of cult-like organizations and the lengths they'll go to keep their followers under control.
