Once Brenda arrives, Chelsea sees that she isn't alone, but brought 5 other people, 4 of them having previously been in the maze. As time goes on Chelsea starts to get closer with one of the newcomers, Newt, and discovers that she doesn't feel alone when she is with him, that she finally for once feels safe. This is the story of seventeen year old Jamie and how she survives through the scorch after being chased away by a crank from the WICKED base, and in between all this, she is still trying to decide if Newt is her true lover while still dealing with a lot of her inner and emotional traumas and problems.

WICKED begin phase 2 of the maze trials, sending the Gladers out into the Scorch, instructing them to make it to the safe heaven in 2 weeks, however on the way Minho meets a girl- a crank living in the 'abandoned' city. Her slightly difficult and humorous nature catches the boys attention, and instantly things change for the boy, and after a while he starts to wonder what love, something he's never really considered before, really is. Is the leader with the cheeky sense of humour who always has a plan to save everyone really as sane as he seems? Because even the immune are capable of losing themselves in the scorch, and even the immune are capable of losing themselves in love.
