In a sleepy kingdom known as the Four Men, divided amongst the valleys of two intersecting mountain ranges, Marwynn Lynbrook lives largely by the moon - that is, nights spent at the Little Seed Inn playing tavern music for money. After the death of Nelson Flan, the old man who taught him to play piano and seemed to understand even the out-of-tune parts of his soul, life feels particularly dull. Though for much different reasons of her own, the same regards to life can be felt by Idris Brontesque, a daughter of royalty who lives in the same nook of the Four Men.
Each of their lives are set into motion by a man with scruffy hair and a pen for writing strange, beautiful music that ties people together in mysterious ways. The three soon discover they aren't alone - in more ways than one - in what each once thought was a characteristic which sat them distinctly apart from the rest of the tired mountainsides they grew up in. As pieces and clues begin falling together and the music leads them to increasingly mysterious people, each stranger than the last, they begin to uncover something much more than any of them ever dreamed possible.
