Crops have failed across the world, birds have fallen from the sky, diseases have ravaged livestock numbers. Countries waged war for resources following the Famine. Borders closed. International travel stopped completely, and fuel became a precious commodity.
Leaders rose and fell, and the new government called themselves the Gentem Syndicate. A group of government officials and large business corporations that initiated a silent coup during the fall of what was once a united country. The Syndicate, with its association with many large businesses, quickly took over the ravaged country.
One of the research foundations that was prioritized by Gentem was a company called the Andromeda Initiative. With riots and crime going unchecked throughout the Famine, one of the greatest selling points of the Syndicate to the people was the promise of safety with astounding innovation in neurocriminology. Andromeda, funded by Gentem associates, thus began the segregation of the "criminally predisposed." Per the Syndicate, every citizen of the New Republic must receive a series of neuroimaging scans and a temperament test at the age of 3 and 15.
Should they fail, they are "re-homed" into one of the Risked Sectors. These "At Risk" individuals are branded with a circular tattoo along with their Tier. The stamp of a Gentem Syndicate At Risk Individual. They are never permitted to leave the Sector.
Sloane was normal, before she failed her scans. Before she was branded. But that was three years ago. And just when she thinks life couldn't get worse, something awakens within her that she cannot control. The Famine changed more than just the availability of resources.
As whispers of rebellion within the Sectors rise, Sloane is one of the first to realize:
The Famine has changed humanity more than anyone knows.
