Seige Stories

Three people with three different perspectives live through the First Crusade siege of Nicaea. Submission for Historical Fiction Spring 2013 Smackdown, Round 2. For this round, we had to write a story set during the Crusades, using 4 of 8 pictures and 3 of nine quotes. Words: 4291 Time Period: First Crusade Pictures: 4 (blond boy with a letter), 5 (Hobbits - I mean travellers - in a mountain pass), 8 (A young woman defending the walls of her city through the power of awesomeness), 11 (a fight in a square - specifically, that square down the street from Rick's Cafe Americain in 'Casablanca', the one Ugarte dies in) Quotes: 2. “Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.” 3. “A sure death, zero chance on success. What are we waiting for?” 6. "You're afraid of what might happen, but I'm afraid of what is happening."

Fenleth -an eight year old farm boy- was rescued and taken in by outriders, the king's cavalry. Now, eleven years later, there's an unexpected siege at the city's gates. Will Fenleth be able to return the favor and warn the others of the attack before it's too late?

In the middle of the night the castle is attacked, the village ransacked and the kingdom torn apart at its heart. A Princess is smuggled out to the safety of her mother's homeland, an isolated village beyond the mountain range where she can grow up. Destined to rule, she does not forsake her birthright and the day will come where she will have to fight for it.

A peculiar tale of dwarven refugees who seek to escape the conquests of the powerful goblins who act as their overpowering rivals. The story mainly follows the leader of the refugees as well as the finishing touches to their new home, the Monolith, Lord Yeris Kerlog. After the goblins attempt to claim the Monolith, a grand fortress named after the rock formation it is constructed within, Kerlog decides to take the key to the Monolith's gates to the deepest parts of the Monolith's mines and caves where strange fiends await. The caves were created long ago, by dwarven miners long before it was eventually turned into a fortress by the miner's ancestors, devout warriors who eventually abandoned it for the cities and towns of the dwarven lands. Rotting and forgotten, the Monolith stands as the final obstacle between the dwarves and the power hungry goblins. However something hides in the long forgotten mines of the Monolith, without most dwarves knowledge...

*One-shot* Nature spirits and Gods alike aren't as all-powerful and untouchable as many think. This Rose Goddess proves that in being imprisoned by a powerful Mortal man and kept under lock and key in a cell that full of the stench of lives lost and pain. Fear is nothing more than a figurative of our imaginations, a personification of our own insecurities and rationality and irrationality at its finest moments. But not really. Even as a sort-of breathing and living creature, he is still capable of many things. Being more human than most is one of them. What one wouldn't expect is that Fear isn't scary, or at least, that's what the little Rose Goddess believes.
