Holt and Jackson had spoken about trying to split themselves apart, they weren't unhappy with how they were. But Holt had suggested the idea one day, and Jackson wasn't a mad scientist for no reason. Jackson had worked on a serum to successfully split them into two separate bodies, being so confident in himself he makes a mistake. Instead of testing the serum on something or another, he immediately tested the serum on himself. That resulted in a successful split with many, many downsides. Yes, they now had separate bodies, but was it worth it if only one of them made it?
