Falltown, a small town by a great lake, is upset because fall is late and the people miss the fall colors. The people learn from a little girl, Lisa, that Mr. Squallman, the wind, has taken their fall season. Lisa thinks she knows where the wind is hiding fall. With permission from her parents, she set out to find the wind and to get him to return fall to Falltown. Along the way, she finds the help of three friends, Old Man Quail, Old Man Beaver, and Old Man Fox, to help outsmart the wind if she needs any. When Lisa meets Mr. Wind, she gets him to play his favorite game, riddles, a game he never loses. However, he says he will only play if her friends play too, and if any of them or Lisa loses, he wins and gets to keep spring. To his dismay, they each answered their riddles, and so, knowing he lost, Mr. Squallman, with a change of heart, as promised, returned spring to its rightful owners. As they travel back, Mr. Wind allows the breeze to flow, bringing the colors back. When Lisa and the wind reach Falltown, everyone sees her and, seeing all the colors on the trees, they thank her for bringing fall back to Falltown. But Lisa knows she could not have done it with the wind, and she quietly thanks him for keeping his promise.
