The Phoenix, the Selkie and the Stoat is a fantasy novel in which many of the characters are shape-shifters. It is set on the fictional island of Muuntosaari ('transformation island') in the Finnish archipelago. One Phoenix (Tulikukka) has died, and her daughter - Tulikki - is learning to become the new Phoenix. Tulikki's other mother - Jill - is a stoat/human shape-shifter who came from the mainland. The father - Nestori - is a Selkie (a seal-human shape shifter). The characters work through their grief by tending their environment and their relationships with other people. There are two forests in the story: the sacred grove and the lonely forest. The former is an ancient forest where fallen trees nurture the soil and feed animal, fungal and other life forms. The lonely forest is an intensively planted spruce forest. The novel ends with a celebration of the revitalization of the lonely forest.
