In 51st century Ireland, a clockwork cyborg named Melville Melbourne must fight inner demons and her own creator if she is to stop the production of killing machines such as herself for the renegade monarchy Lexicon. While in the all-too-present 52nd century, Esmer Somers must aid and abet a known murderer in order to help the rebel cause in a world in which everyone is controlled by a sadistic storyteller called a literal.
