In an ornate drawing-room, an eccentric scientist announces that he is building a machine which will transport him through the fourth dimension. His friends fear he has become obsessed with being reunited with his deceased wife, though one of the group, known as 'The Doctor', encourages them to allow him to present his findings, and perhaps shed light on why he and Ace seem to be lost in the Victorian age.

After The Master sacrifices himself for Dorothy, she resigns herself to a life of loneliness. Nancy has also abandoned her to live with Mr and Mrs Turlough in Australia for a time. Six months pass and Dorothy is starting to contemplate suicide as she feels there is nothing worth living for. One December night Dorothy gets a mysterious visitor who then proceeds to kidnap her to her home planet Xentang 6, a Morph planet that works on invaders psyche. The Master has inherited The RANIs TARDIS and it lands on Xentang 6 too at the moment that Dorothy is being dragged by Giant Snakes called Mambites to a clearing that has a dark looking throne - an equally dark woman steps out from the chair... Dorothy is bait to get The Doctor to lie at her feet... But who is the woman? Why does she hate the Doctor? Will the revenant Master be able to save both The Doctor and Dorothy, or does he have to make the worst choice he has ever had to make in his life?

The Doctor and Jo are still trying to get to Metebelis Three, but the Doctor overshot the coordinates- again. Luckily, they end up on Earth this time. But it is the future, and they are in Boston, Massachusetts. Jo decides to take a look round, because she is curious, as usual. Besides, what could possibly go wrong? (Takes place after "The Carnival of Monsters")

He arrives on Bellus VI, a beautiful colony world filled with a seemingly endless variety of alien inhabitants. But after the Bellus Central Mainframe (BCM) detects his arrival, he is apprehended and imprisoned. The Doctor expects a fair trial, but after being broken out by Rebels who despise the New Law, the Doctor discovers the mechanical truth behind the Bellus Security Department (BSD) and their actions. The Doctor realises that he must stop them before an incident, similar to what happened previously on Bellus IV, sends the planet into a war which neither side will win.
