Magic disappeared. Magic returned. And then, the world ended. This is our world, but not our world. It is a world of islands, floating in the sky. Once there was magic. Then for a time, there was none. And then there was magic again. Once, long ago, magic disappeared from the world so completely that the people who lived then came to believe magic had never been. They were wrong, and magic returned, and those people pridefully fought the very gods in a terrible war, a destructive war, which only ended when the surface of the world had been cracked asunder and cast up into the sky. Now the world is broken into pieces, into separate islands, floating slowly in the sky. Now the people of this age live as best they can, scavenging and fighting and loving, doing all the things people have always done, but now doing those things in the sky. On one island, Sema, a farm girl, watches as her family are killed by pirates. On another, in a city, a thousand miles to south, Cassa is about to marry a man she does not love. Sema must survive, and in her own way Cassa must survive too. Slowly they are drawn together, and their meeting may save the world. * * * * * So because it turns out if I do normal romance everyone hates me, I’m going to try a couple of different things... So this is fantasy, just because, so... um, here! I’m not sure how it’ll go because I haven’t tried before, but if you’d like to look, then please do! Oh, the odd chapter numbering is because I'm kind of thinking longer chapters, and swapping between the two characters, so 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 are the parts of chapter one and about Sema, and then 2.1 is the start of the actual chapter 2. If that makes sense :) And also, thank you for looking!

Ellie is a soldier in a world without governments. A generation ago, a series of financial crises caused most of the world’s governments to collapse, and left many of the people in those countries in terrible personal debt. Since then, the worst debtor nations have been under military occupation by the troops of the debt recovery corporations, and the worst debtor of all is Měi-guó, the old United States. Ellie is serving in the Afghan Police Action when she receives bad news from home. She is told the daughter she hasn’t seen in years is dead. She flies home from war, upset, to do what needs to be done, but once there she finds out all is not as it seems. Ellie’s daughter is alive and unhurt. She is being held by of one of the many debt-recovery corporations. Held, for leverage, to make Ellie do the corporation a favour. Ellie’s daughter will be returned unharmed if Ellie does as they wish. The son of a company director is lost somewhere in the wilderness of post-debt-restructuring America, and hasn't been seen for three days. The company wants Ellie to go and find the kid, and Ellie doesn't know if she can. The one rule she's stuck to all her working life is to never to go to America, but now she might have to. She will have to, if she wants to save the daughter she hasn't seen in years. This is fairly dark and gritty near-future dystopian SF. ----- Debt Collectors War is now on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QZG1RHI/ Also on iTunes and B&N and other places. Just if that's easier to read that way! But please don't feel obliged or anything, and thank you for looking -----

Hana is a recently graduated diplomat, leaving on her first assignment. She must travel to a world she has never heard of and try to stop a war. The war may already have begun. It may never have happened. There is no way to know, until she arrives, because news can only travel as fast as a starship. Hana has no authority, and no ability to compel the warring parties to make peace, and she cannot leave until the war is over. And if that takes more than a week - the length of time a starship remains in orbit around any planet - then the vessel she arrived on will leave without her, and she will have to wait for the next. That wait could take her whole life. It is a backwater planet, with neither strategic importance nor much of anything to trade. Exactly the kind of planet a recent-graduated diplomat is sent to. And on a forgotten, backwater planet, in a turbulent, seething galaxy, that next ship might be a very long time coming. It could be years, or even decades. If Hana fails to make peace in a week, she may be stuck, and her career over before it has begun. She may also be dead, if her peacemaking goes very badly wrong. * * * And to save people starting if it isn’t their thing, this is meant to be gritty, realistic space opera. So no aliens, no FTL, no neutrino communications, the technology is just there and who cares how it works, planets are sovereign polities and interplanetary war is almost impossible - and also pointless - but conflicts within a planet are common and this is what Hana wants to stop. So also, she isn’t saving the galaxy or anything important!

The Nine Worlds of medieval times are threatened by threats from Norse and Gaelic mythology, and only the teenagers -- the Venetian mariner's daughter, Clarinda, and Hospitaller knight, Ríg -- can prevent the return of the darkest of the Artifacts of Destiny, the Codex Lacrimae. If they manage to survive, Clarinda & Ríg will discover whether friendship and perhaps love can stand against the host of villainous enemies, supernatural forces, and the march-to-war on different planes of existence caused by the return of the most corrupt of the Books of Fates, and the different paths that they will choose are unexpected and filled with perils that are literally out of this world. In action-filled journeys and breathtaking battles that range across exotic locales such as the besieged Krak des Chevaliers on Midgard, to the Weeping Wood of Svartalfheim, the Dwarf-Caverns of Nidaveller, and even to the fabled Fjords of Asgard, the relationship between the Norn and Hospitaller knight develops and deepens. With an unpredictable outcome that confounds traditional expectations of the genre and begins the tale of a thousand year-romance, this first book of The Artifacts of Destiny will surprise and delight readers of epic fantasy!

Magic caused the war. Magic is forbidden. Magic will save us. The Relic Guild is the award nominated first book in The Relic Guild trilogy. It was said the Labyrinth had once been the great meeting place, a sprawling city at the heart of an endless maze where a million humans hosted the Houses of the Aelfir. But when the Thaumaturgists, overlords of human and Aelfir alike, went to war, everything was ruined and the Labyrinth became an abandoned prison. The surviving humans were trapped behind boundary walls a hundred feet high, and all magic was forbidden. And now the war is returning. The Relic Guild are all that stand against the end of the city. But they are old, scattered and weak, and the enemy is growing in strength... Here in THE RELIC GUILD (and other stories) please enjoy a large chunk of The Relic Guild Trilogy (published with kind permission of my publisher Gollancz), complete short stories, the odd poem, one or two blog posts, and samples chapters from my other novels.
