Kara Winters grew up with her Gran, since her mother ran off, and her Gran raised her. Her Gran was a famous pastry/chocolate chef, who made wonderful sweets by using silver sugar she taught Kara to make with sugar apples. Kara's dream is to become a famous pastry/chocolate chef like her Gran, to travel to many towns to sell them like her Gran did. However, to be able to do so, because traveling on the road alone as a woman can be dangerous, she decides to go to the Fairy Market, and buy a Warrior Fairy. To Kara, fairies are people, and are her equals, just as her Gran did. Kara believes fairies and humans can learn to coexist. Kara is a blunt woman, and tells people what she thinks of them. Like her Gran who used to be a nurse for knights before she was a famous pastry/chocolate chef, Kara has a foul mouth. However, when she buys Shall Fen Shall, she promises to give him his freedom, and give his wing back, after she sells her first pastries/chocolate in the town she is traveling to, but traveling there on a dangerous road will be harsh.
