Maybe they weren't at the top. Maybe? Well, obviously they weren't at the top. The famous spiders really weren't at the top of the pyramid. Life had always been cruel, perhaps deluding us into thinking we were the best and that we were indestructible. Or perhaps not even letting us survive long enough to reach that conclusion.
