Heading the operation is the unstable, unpredictable, loony leader of the rebellion: Shard. And Octavia becomes his personal prisoner. For the second time, Octavia's life is turned upside down. She must survive the dangers of being a hostage. Dangers range from dodging actual bullets to enduring mental manipulation. She cannot even find solace in being returned home with a ransom payment like the other hostages because Shard keeps her ransom a secret from those trying to get the hostages back. Most of Shard's own Chromies don't know what her price is, either. Few understand and know how this secret ransom works.
