He doesn't expect the first day to have unexpected "drags", or that he would find a reason to step out of his comfort zone. Temari's life is a drag with a brother who practically qualifies for the 'hikikomori' label, and could blow up at any minute due to anti-social issues. She also deals with being mislabeled as a 'yankee' by the other students at her school. Everybody cared to much about appearances, and life in general ended up dragged down. A hikikomori is a shut in, but more specifically a hikikomori is a person who struggles for a long period of time to venture out of their homes, and they also struggle with social interactions/forming social bonds. A yankee is slang for a female gang member in Japan, particularly one that rides bikes.
