She watched the emotionless face of the sandy haired little girl in the mirror. Watched how the girl's eyes watered more and more and how the tears finally spilled from them to run down the girls pale cheeks and drop from her chin. Not one muscle of the small face so much as twitched. Ai Haibara reached up and wiped her tears away.
That arrogant, reckless, idiotically optimistically boy had been her safety net, the centre that her world could safely spin around. He had been her hero, who she could safely hide behind and trust him to protect her. He had been there to convince her to greet every new morning with a smile. He had been there to show her what it meant to be happy again. He had given her a home, friends ... and something so very close to a new family.
He had left her behind. Her safety net had been cut out from beneath her, the centre removed to leave her world spinning wildly without focus. He had left her without his support, his aid, his ability to make her see the light in the darkness. He had left her without his help, without hope, had left her to shoulder the burdens he had passed onto her. He had left her with darkness. Had left her to complete his mission. Had left her to be her own hero...
She looked at the girl in the mirror, watched how she tried to dry her face, wiping her sleeves over her eyes until she gave up knowing that the tears would continue flowing for a long time.
How? How would she possibly be able to go on? To continue and accomplish his mission, carry his burdens for him? Without him? A small fist collided with the mirror and sent the shards flying to the sides as a young voice filled with desperate anger yelled: "HOW?!?!", to fill the empty big house with anything that wasn't silence and darkness. How could she, Sherry, be a hero?
AU in which Ai Haibara aka Shiho Miyano aka Sherry takes the role of protagonist.
I don't own Detective Conan. Gosho Aoyama does.
