The Shortys is a place to challenge yourself, celebrate creativity, and connect with a community united by a love of words and creative expression. On September 1st, this year's prompts will be revealed. You'll then have the entire month to bring your ideas to life and share your work. So sharpen your wits and ready your words. There are people who become part of your life without you ever realizing how much they will mean to you. For Amaya, Auden was simply a friend - someone who slowly became familiar, someone whose presence found its way into ordinary days and quiet memories. But somewhere along the way, something changed. A feeling she never planned for. A hope she never said aloud. A story she could only write from her side. So what do you do when something feels like it could have been, but never quite becomes? Perhaps some feelings aren't meant to be confessed. Perhaps some people aren't meant to stay. And perhaps an almost can still be a story worth telling.

|THIS IS A TRUE STORY · SHORTYS 2026| Victoria Christie is on her way to Maine to visit her parents and escape the looming psychology exam. Still, when she unexpectedly stumbles into American Horror Story The Second, she must learn to give up or stand up for herself. *** All Victoria Christie wanted was a smooth flight to Bangor and five fun days with her parents, escaping a psychology exam and finding out if she's on the spectrum (not to mention her crappy Math skills and self-confidence, too). However, as soon as she's on that 8:20 flight to Charlotte, her problems begin piling up one by one. Now Victoria must find a way to escape American Horror Story The Second before it devours her and sends her ashes to Maine, where she will never have the chance to learn true self-confidence. As Victoria works through her anxiety and uncertainty, she'll learn that beneath her flaws, she may have one skill that could get her to Maine. Now she must figure out the best time to use it before she's stuck in Charlotte forever. *** *This is a true story that touches on neurodiversity, something I'm working through now as a newly diagnosed adult, so please be respectful.* *Moral: "Stand up for yourself."*

Yet prayer proves a poor refuge for a heart that has kept one name too faithfully, and before the gilded Virgin he must reckon with a devotion he cannot bring himself to call sinful.

Digital tarot programs calculate the future with near-perfect accuracy, and the law treats their predictions as fact. Nia, an unlicensed Cancer chart reader surviving in the port city of Pisces, has learned to question what the official readings leave unsaid. When a frightened stranger's cards predict that he will commit murder before sunrise--and identify Nia as his victim--she discovers a second outcome hidden beneath the approved forecast. Someone is not merely predicting the future. They are arranging it. With the help of a mysterious Libra hacker, Nia is drawn into a conflict spanning all twelve zodiac territories. To survive, she must uncover who controls the predictions before the system turns her rebellion into proof that it was right about her all along.

Jungkook had his 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐞𝐧𝐝 completely planned out. Just him, his dog Bam, and zero drama! But, now Jungkook is 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐜𝐤 sharing a roof with the coldest, most annoying, insanely flirty guy he knows. They can't agree on a single thing, but their dogs becomes instant best friends. And after one ridiculously chaotic weekend, Jungkook is left trying to figure out if he actually hates his neighbor... or if he's in serious 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞.

Rome, 1557. Fifteen-year-old Filomena 'the Amazon' has learned that survival in a home for abandoned girls run by nuns depends upon keeping her head down and her hands busy. When Suor Pacifica is found dead on the kitchen floor, Filomena inherits the good sister's duties and, for the first time in her life, a bed of her own and a glimpse of a future shaped by her gift for cooking. Then a mute, blood-soaked girl appears inside the walled herb garden. A trail of blood leads Filomena through Rome's fogbound streets to the reedy banks of the Tiber, where a murdered man floats beneath the shadow of Castel Sant' Angelo. The night guard is eager to accept the easiest explanation. Filomena is left with a terrified orphan whose stubborn silence conceals a dangerous truth.

Brought to life by a desperate need to survive the bustling game of survival that is life in Lagos she wishes for one thing. When the world gridlocks - roads, rails, and skyports jammed beyond rescue - only the hydrogen‑powered Rockhoppers can reach the unreachable. On the jagged coastal crags near Bondi Beach, an intergalactic rock band prepares for the most secret performance in history. Their helicopters hover above the surf, pontoon tanks gleaming in the dusk, as instruments are lowered onto the rocks below. But amid the roar of the waves and the hum of hydrogen rotors, a signal cuts through the static - a transmission from fifty years in the future, carrying the voice of their own lead singer. It warns of a cosmic resonance linking Bondi to the Small Magellanic Cloud, and to a fate that could echo across time itself. As the Jodrell Bank telescope locks onto the shimmering infundibulum, the band must decide whether to play the final note that will define - or destroy - their legacy.
