I felt the warmth of Ethan's body come up next to me and I nearly collapsed into him.
"Ethan?" I couldn't recognize my voice at this point.
"Yeah Mer?" His voice sounded like concrete. Strong, firm and consistent.
"They're dead." My ears rang with the silence that followed and I just kept my eyes fixated on the two identical slabs of stone in front of me.
"Yeah, yeah they are." His voice wasn't concrete anymore. Instead it was gravel and broken glass and pain strung together by vocal chords that were playing the saddest song they could.
I took as deep of a breath as I could manage. How could life go from warp speed to slow motion in a nanosecond? I closed my eyes in an extended blink and the red and blue sirens that haunted my dreams shone behind my eyelids. I opened them and the harsh, grey rock greeted my sight instead.
I didn't know which one was more painful.
The moment that changed everything.
Or every moment after.
