"Why didn't you tell me?", he asks. I keep my eyes fixed on the table between us, where the box sits silently. "I didn't know." He doesn't say anything for a long time after that, and we both observe the box, avoiding each other's eyes. "What do we do,", I whisper when the quiet has sat with us long enough. When he doesn't speak, tears spring to my eyes. I am losing him.

There is the world everyone else lives in, and then there is the sickle world. ​It's a place where a change in the weather isn't just an inconvenience-it's a physical threat. Where plans are always written in pencil because your own blood cells can decide to stage a coup at any given moment. ​The Sickle World is a collection of raw, conversational prose and poetry written from the trenches of chronic illness. Your red blood cells change shape when you have sickle cell anemia, going from being round, flexible discs to stiff, sticky sickle cells that obstruct blood flow. Around half of those with sickle cell anemia survive into their 50s thanks to early detection and cutting-edge therapies.

Hell I was.I had been expecting to see the typical Mexican girl with the generous features which she'd obviously not be shy to show, but here she was,skinny with little or no hips and just average breasts. She almost looked sick but if that was the case dad would've told me.Hell she was classy,totally not the cropped top type. This poem is dedicated to those who have lost their lives due to complications of sickle cell. This is a problem an epidemic that has to change we are loosing warriors too soon. Mothers are loosing their children, children are loosing their mothers and fathers.
