"Why didn't you tell me?", he asks. I keep my eyes fixed on the table between us, where the box sits silently. "I didn't know." He doesn't say anything for a long time after that, and we both observe the box, avoiding each other's eyes. "What do we do,", I whisper when the quiet has sat with us long enough. When he doesn't speak, tears spring to my eyes. I am losing him.

There is the world everyone else lives in, and then there is the sickle world. It's a place where a change in the weather isn't just an inconvenience-it's a physical threat. Where plans are always written in pencil because your own blood cells can decide to stage a coup at any given moment. The Sickle World is a collection of raw, conversational prose and poetry written from the trenches of chronic illness. It's not an idealized story of "triumphing over adversity," nor is it a clinical breakdown of a medical condition. Instead, it's a blunt, middle-of-the-night look at the reality of living in a body that hurts. It captures the heavy silence of the hospital room, the frustration of being misunderstood by a healthy world, the exhausting mental math of pacing your own energy, and the quiet, stubborn resilience it takes to keep breathing through a crisis. This is for anyone who knows what it's like to mourn the versions of themselves they had to leave behind. It's for the chronically ill who are tired of being told to "stay positive," and for the people who love them who want to finally understand what it really feels like inside the storm. No filters. No toxic positivity. Just the beautiful, painful, absolute truth of a life lived one heartbeat at a time.

Atlantic International School was meant to prepare teenagers for the future. Instead, it teaches them how to survive chaos. Nurhan doesn't just fall in love, she falls too many times, confusing affection for safety. Sadiq is charming, reckless, and hiding a dangerous double life. Adelabu's secret relationship promises love but delivers consequences she never imagined. Omolara brings the violence of her home into school corridors no teacher can protect her from. Zayd and Zayyan were brothers by choice, until betrayal turned them into enemies. And twins Zoe and Zendaya learn that insecurity can destroy even the strongest bond. Behind pressed uniforms, morning assemblies, and whispered gossip are secret pregnancies, drugs, broken homes, tangled friendships, and emotions no one knows how to handle. This isn't a sweet high-school love story. It's about Nigerian teenagers growing up too fast in a system that looks away. Because at Atlantic International School, madness isn't the problem...it's the curriculum. Lessons will be learnedπŸ₯Ί Hearts will be broken πŸ’” Secrets will never stay buried 😐 Welcome to Lessons In Lunacy. Class is in session.

A manifestation of the genetic blood condition sickle cell disease is sickle cell anemia. Your red blood cells change shape when you have sickle cell anemia, going from being round, flexible discs to stiff, sticky sickle cells that obstruct blood flow. Around half of those with sickle cell anemia survive into their 50s thanks to early detection and cutting-edge therapies.

I blinked."Sophia,Sophia De la FuentΓ©?" "Yes that's me",she replied, her expression showing she saw that I was shocked. Hell I was.I had been expecting to see the typical Mexican girl with the generous features which she'd obviously not be shy to show, but here she was, skinny with little or no hips and just average breasts. She almost looked sick but if that was the case dad would've told me.Hell she was classy, totally not the cropped top type. She had on a simple but elegant black gown and nude stilletos with a black mallet "You look surprised. Not what you were expecting?",she said. "Yeah" "Hmm,so is that good or bad?" "Quite frankly,I don't know" And I meant it.

It takes a special kind of family to raise a kid with a debilitating illness. But if you can survive the challenges of raising a kid with Sickle Cell and usher that kid to adulthood with your family intact, that's a bond strong enough to withstand anything. This is a true story about my Sickle Cell diagnosis at 3 years old and how my family dealt with the long hospital stays, finding a doctor who cares, finding ways to make home life as comfortable as possible, and never ever letting me see myself as a burden. This is one short story from a full length autobiography I've been writing over the past year.
