If you are searching for a cheerful story about two well-adjusted teenagers who make excellent decisions, I regret to inform you that you have opened the wrong book entirely. You would be much better off reading a book about a happy golden retriever, or perhaps a manual on the proper way to polish a banister. ​Inside this wretched volume, you will encounter Yeon Sieun, a boy who treats human interaction the way most people treat a leaking container of radioactive waste. You will also encounter Jang Hyeri, a girl who possesses a wealthy family, spotless grades, and a reputation so polished it practically blinds bystanders. 'Polished,' in this case, means she spends a great deal of energy hiding a home life that is entirely hollow. ​A wiser narrator would tell you that when these two crossed paths, something magical happened. But I am not a wise narrator, and there is no magic here. There is only a slow, deeply inconvenient, and entirely unauthorized realization that they are stuck with one another. ​They became the only place the other felt safe.
