"I can't. This is wrong," Ælflæd whispered, her hands trembling as she pushed Sihtric away, though her fingers lingered for a heartbeat too long. Sihtric frowned, hurt flashing across his face. "How is it wrong?" "Because the Danes took everything from me," she said, her voice cracking. "My home. My family. I'm supposed to hate you. I'm supposed to hate all of you. My faith demands it. My people demand it." He stepped closer, but slower this time, as if approaching a frightened animal. "And what do you demand?" She swallowed. "God says it is wrong." "Does he?" Sihtric asked gently. "Or do men speak for him?" Her breath faltered. "If loving me brings you peace instead of pain... if it makes you feel alive instead of hollow... how can that be wrong?" he continued.
