When a company tells me they're ethnically diversifying the cast to reflect the world around us, I don't think, "hey, I'm finally represented because all that representation that's come before doesn't count." Instead, the first thought of a non-white person is to think, "Uh-oh. What unintentional negative message is going to sneak its way into the narrative that I didn't want." And actually seeing some of these unintentional messages already present in the promotional material is major cringe for me.
