He is a strong fighter and trusty scout in the Second Massachusetts. The group have taken shelter in an abandoned hospital until they figure out where to go next. Hal and Maggie had found Karen nearby and she has been a worry to the group. When Ben and Karen suddenly disappear and later appear with threats and Skitter forces, Ben is put under pressure to serve for the Skitters in the area. He is soon left with the daring choice of leaving the Skitters or staying and doing their filthy bidding. In 1899, Jack Kelly just wanted to give up. The strike wasn't turning in the newsboys' favor, and he'd almost been caught by Snyder four times in one month. He needed a miracle. Instead, he got an eye-rolling, sarcasm-giving, blonde-haired smart-ass who seemed to have come from nowhere. It's 1969, and 17-year-old Gemma Mullaney's world is spinning out of her control. A former art student now turned peace advocate, Gemma's boyfriend has just been drafted into the war in Vietnam and is said to be missing in action. She is afraid she will lose him like she lost her father the year prior. After a visit to her father's headstone one evening, she feels as though someone is following her home, much to her horror. The next morning, she wakes up to be on her own in New York City, currently having its own inner battles such as trolley worker riots and the newsboys' strike of 1899.

The reader gets a Newsies costume from somewhere, and then they and their brother go to their grandparents, and their grandparents have a magic wardrobe and the reader gets pulled into the closet and ends up in Brooklyn, a little while before the strike and it is the plot of the Broadway show. And the reader has to finish the story to get back to the present time. What happens when they fall for the smart mouthed reporter?
