The cat that Mahiru owned, Kuro, was clearly not normal with deep blue fur and red eyes not to mention the strange fluff at the end of his tail. You, and your older sister Rin, lived with foster parents and Rin was having meetings with a strange person. You were beaten and called useless but that all stopped when Mahiru and Kuro found you. Maybe Kuro was more than just a lazy ass.

For a long time now, any girls born in the Saiki family were granted psychic abilities... It was a secret well kept by the family for generations...
