Annabelle is from the Wood family and as you know, all of them are Gryffindors meaning she is the only Slytherin in her family. When Annabelle owled her family to tell them that she was in Slytherin, let's just say they weren't happy, especially her brother Oliver. They were all furious leading Anna to be disowned. Snape being head of Slytherin, was the first to know, apart from Dumbledore, about her situation and since she had become one of his favorite students, he adopted her.
