In a world where beast-men are bred, ranked, and owned, Linda Hale has never questioned the system - not really. Her family's service beast-man, Darian, has always been part of the household and it has always felt as it should be. Beast-men are property. Service types are trained. Expendables are disposable. So when Linda asks to take an Expendable home for "practice," no one questions her motives - least of all her father. Kael was already scheduled to die. Now he's scheduled to live a little longer. But outside the institution, there are no procedures. No structure. No clear purpose. Removed from the clean, predictable brutality of the system, Kael is placed into something far less defined: the private world of Hale House. By the time he arrives, he is no longer a numbered asset. He is hers. Yet removing him from institutional cruelty does not make him safe - it only removes the rules. Within a household where hierarchy is quiet but absolute, kindness may prove more dangerous than violence. Possession begins to blur with instinct. Control begins to resemble care. And the lines between subject, servant... and something far more forbidden start to dissolve. In Hale House, Kael must learn what it means to exist without knowing his place.

***The Corner Booth Contest Runner-Up*** WARNING: contains one blue-eyed stranger, one fast-talking heroine, and a couple of scenes steamier than a mirage at noon. Throw in gigantic dust storms, lawmen out for blood, plus a wasteland to be traversed and you are in for an adventure sultrier than the desert sun! You would think May was living in paradise. After all, a gorgeous man just showed up on her porch willing to do anything she asks of him. But this is no paradise. May lives in a world settled by technology-rejecting idealists wishing to live in harmony with the land. That land, however, has not been very cooperative. The desert in the heart of the planet is spreading outward at an alarming pace, swallowing anything that gets in its way. And May? She's in its way, all right! Alone on her parents' dying farm, May has two goats, a shotgun, and a whole lot of dust. That's about all she has, until the day Ro shows up. Ro brings with him a secret most of their world isn't ready to face. The lawmen on his tail will do whatever it takes, including murder, to keep that secret buried in the desert sand. If they don't succeed in killing May and Ro, no matter: the desert might just do the job for them.

I jump suddenly, startled by a drip from somewhere in front me. As I make my way through the labyrinth of tunnels, I pull my cloak tight around my shoulders, shaking off any more thoughts about my bad decisions. I know these tunnels by heart, but that doesn't mean nightmarish things aren't lurking in the shadows of the rusty underbelly of the kingdom. I have to be ready for anything, especially when I'm headed to an illegal underground fight. These tunnels are illegal to travel through to begin with. Keeping up my guard and shaking off my distracting thoughts, I continue ahead to my next bad decision.

When do your values and desires truly change? Could it be when you see the harshness of the world? When you gain power to change the world that you reside in? Or is it when you start to fade away from your old self? Only you can truly decide that. Dante struggles to find who he is destined to be, and no longer can hear the pleas of his only friends. If only Adama could reach out to Dante and make him see reason then maybe... maybe all the blood shed would end. I do not own the cover art.

[Highest Ranking: #483 in Action || March.11.2017] x x x N o t e : I would highly suggest for you to not read this. It's written terribly and the plot is all over the place. This book will be re-written. x x x "I like you, Blake. I like you a lot." Hunter whispers softly. He moves his fingers to brush a strand of my hair back. "And I know you like me too. Why can't you just admit it, Red? Why? x x x When Blake finds out that the tattoo she has can cause danger to the people around her, she is forced to leave the only home she's ever known. Along the way she meets Hunter; a stuck up, cocky, asshole, with a dark past. Together, along with a few new friends, Blake uncovers the real reason as to why her tattoo is so 'dangerous', as well as the shocking hidden secrets of her country's history, which could forever change the future of Mertensia. x x x I know I'm not that great at summaries but I'd really appreciate it if you gave my book a chance. The first few chapters (especially chapter 1 & 2) aren't that great, but it gets better! ~Elm Gray
