"Duty first." He says it like a rule. Like a prayer. Like something carved into bone. And she nods...even when her heart wants to ask,"And me?" This is not a love story that begins with stolen glances. It begins with family decisions. Horoscopes matched. Steel trunks packed. A wedding under the weight of olive green. The nineties. Landline calls that end too soon. Handwritten letters that smell like ink and longing. Army quarters where wives learn the sound of boots before they learn the rhythm of their husband's breathing. They were strangers when the sindoor was placed. Strangers when the regiment called his name louder than she ever could. Strangers... who slowly started choosing each other in the quiet after the bugle call. He belongs to the nation. She belongs to the vow. And somewhere between salutes and suppressed desires, love begins to bloom..not loudly, not rebelliously, but devotionally. This is a story of officers who will always choose the border over the bed. Of wives who will fold their loneliness like a neatly pressed uniform. Of couples who do not fall in love at first sight...but kneel into it,day by day, like prayer. It is about more than one marriage. More than one longing. Brothers in uniform. Brides learning to love men who were trained never to need. Some will fight their own hearts. Some will almost break. Some will whisper, "Stay,"even when they know he will leave at dawn. Because here, desire burns. But duty wins. And yet..love does not lose. It transforms. It waits. It worships. "After the nation," he tells her softly one night, folding his uniform with careful hands, "there is only you." And for a soldier's wife in the nineties, that is not second place. That is everything.

Enter Zayden Doun, Averyn's childhood friend and a young private with a British-Chinese heritage. As Averyn navigates the ups and downs of her daily life, she finds solace and support in Zayden's unwavering friendship. But it's Colonel Andres who proves to be the most enigmatic figure in Averyn's world. Despite his esteemed rank, the colonel's demeanour oscillates between a prideful soldier in public and an annoying jerk in private. Every encounter with him leaves Averyn frustrated and exasperated, yet there's an undeniable tension simmering beneath the surface. As Averyn grapples with her feelings for both Zayden and Colonel Andres, she finds herself drawn into a whirlwind of emotions, navigating the complexities of love, loyalty, and self-discovery. Will she succumb to the charms of the dashing colonel, or will she choose the comfort and familiarity of her childhood friend? And amidst the chaos of her personal life, will Averyn be able to find her voice and stand up for what she truly believes in?" Averyn: "Welcome to Le Petit Café, where every cup tells a story." Colonel Andres: "I'll have my usual, and make it quick." Averyn: "Pleasure as always, Colonel." Zayden: "Hey, Ave. Long time no see." Averyn: "Zayden! It's been too long." Colonel Andres: "You're wasting your time here, Averyn. You should be doing something more... worthwhile." Averyn: "I'll decide what's worthwhile for myself, thank you very much." Averyn: "Sometimes, the hardest battles are the ones we fight within ourselves."

"So, you ran away from your own wedding?" The mystery man asked. The old brick wall of the park separating the two. Elyah on one side, Mystery man on the other. "Yeah.. It just felt wrong, getting married to him if I don't love him." Elyah heard the man breathe deeply. She was curious as to who he was but she was too embarrassed at the moment to look. "Why is that?" His voice was soft, not cold or harsh. "You see, I thought I loved him. I thought I'd able to fool myself that he was my soulmate. Though, Three months in, I realized I was still in love with someone else. I guess since then I've been faking it, thinking those feelings would fade." Elyah sat on the ground with her back pressed against the brick wall. She didn't care about her wedding dress being ruined. "Who was he? The man you still love, I mean." Elyah sighed. Every single memory of him flooded her mind. It made her chest hurt, Every piece of her ached to be loved like that again, to feel that happy again, even to feel that happy again. It took everything in her not to break down into a fit of sobs and beg the gods to lead him back to her. "He was..." PENDING SOULMATES UPDATES EVERY SUNDAY, WEDNESDAY, OR SATURDAY. "She make you wanna die for her..." He sings along to Chris Lane's new song, For Her as he's pointing at me. I of course smile at him. This line makes me ponder. I give him a certain look and he turns the radio down. "Is everything okay?" he asks. "Yeah, I was just wondering. Would you really die for me?" "Cassie." He stares at me with his brown eyes. "I would do anything to keep you safe. I would fight and fight until I die to keep you safe." I blush at this comment and we continue our ride in silence down the dirt road.

Chicago, 1944. In a war that has taken more than it has given, Clarence Clark arrives at a military infirmary carrying wounds that refuse to stay on the surface. Rosetta Whitmore is the nurse assigned to his care; efficient, composed, and determined to remain untouched by the chaos around her. Their connection begins quietly. In late-night conversations, in the soft turning of pages, in words written but never meant to be sent. What forms between them is not sudden, nor easily defined. It is something built in pauses, in restraint, in the kind of closeness that exists just beyond what can be spoken. But the world they inhabit is not made for them. As war gives way to peace, they are pulled back into lives shaped by expectation, distance, and silence. Years pass, and what once felt undeniable is left behind; unspoken, unresolved. Until it isn't. Because some things do not fade with time. They wait. And when they return, they ask a question neither of them can ignore: Was it ever something they could truly leave behind?

She was forced to attend Davidson Military Academy, even though it was an all boys Academy. Things turn from bad to worse: she learned that in the Holy Bible, the Antichrist will have a "666" shaped birthmark under his scalp while his bride will have the same birthmark on one of her breasts (kinda like a boob tattoo ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)). What is hope? By dictionary definition it is: 1. to look forward to with confidence or expectation, or 2. to believe or desire. I believe that hope is never giving up and always looking towards the future with, well, hope. I really need to remember that. But it's hard when I start to wonder if it is possible to find true love after multiple failed relationships. That's all I want... That's all I hope for. Cover by: @silver_lining86
