Those residency programs were in the Department of Surgery and the Department of Urology. These types of procedures are design to benefit the patient by giving them less scarring with a small incision made for the surgery, fewer days in the hospital if any and a faster overall recovery time. Sonn uses the system for treating patients with prostate cancer, which is a common cancer in the United States.

Practicing at the Urology Group of Western New England in Springfield, Massachusetts, Dr. Donald Sonn is a physician who specializing in urology, impotence, prostheses and stone diseases. There is a lot of information about kidney stones, and Sonn is a physician who helps people with the painful condition. Stone disease is a very common condition that affects more than five percent of all adults in the United States. Almost two million people annually go to their doctor seeking treatment; included in this number are the people who rush to the emergency room every room looking for relief from their painful condition. One of the most common non-cancerous disorders of the urinary tract, the number of people suffering from kidney stones is rising year after year. Dr. Donald Sonn helps his patients with this very painful condition. Dr. Donald Sonn notes that men are more likely to develop a kidney stone more than women. Those of the white ethnicity are more likely to develop the stone disease more than any other race or ethnicity. Though it is not completely known what causes a kidney stone to occur, obesity and stress are often considered related causes of the stone disease. Researchers have found evidence of kidney stone in mummified Egyptians remains that are more than seven thousand years old. This shows that even people who were experiencing the stress of their life, and statistically during the middle of their life when commitments are at their highest, even thousands of years ago could not escape the ever painful stone disease. Dr. Donald Sonn has practiced medicine for nearly 20 years and over that time he has seen many advances in surgeries. These new techniques are making surgeries less risky and invasive while reducing the recovery time so patients can get back to their lives sooner. Additionally, these new techniques help to reduce the risk of scarring and other unwanted side effects that are common in more invasive treatment options. One such technique is a treatment called Greenlight Laser Therapy. Donald Sonn was one of the first doctors in the New England area to perform surgeries using the Greenlight Therapy and he says it can greatly reduce the recovery time for men suffering from certain prostate issues. This therapy is mostly used to treat a condition known as benign prostate hyperplasia or BHP. Benign prostate hyperplasia is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. This condition affects more than 50% of men over the age of 60. The symptoms of BHP can include frequent and painful urination, weak urine flow and starting or stopping during urination. Until the invention of Greenlight LaserTherapy, BHP was only treatable by the use of medication or invasive surgery techniques such as transurethral resection of the prostate. However, thanks to Greenlight Laser Therapy, BHP can now be treated using a fairly simple outpatient procedure that lets patients get back to their lives with minimal risk. Greenlight Laser Therapy is just one example of the way medical advances are changing the way doctors conduct surgeries. Doctors and researchers are continuing to find new ways to advance the field of medicine and combat disease.

One of the specialties of Donald Sonn, longtime Urologic Surgeon at the Urology Group of Western New England, is the use of robotic surgery, via the state of the art da Vinci system, for Prostate Cancer. Well-educated and with over 17 years of medical experience, Sonn continues to use this advanced medical tool to provide patients with prostate cancer the expert treatment and care they deserve. Prostate Cancer, as Donald Sonn knows, consists of malignant cells that form within the tissues of the prostate. One of the most commonly diagnosed forms of cancers in men (1 in 6 will be diagnosed over the course of a lifetime), prostate cancer isn’t an easy condition for patients, though through advanced screening, awareness and early diagnosis, most of these cancers can be localized and treated before they begin the spread elsewhere. As Donald Sonn knows, prostate cancer is responsible for the deaths of more people than any other form of cancer, with the exception of lung cancer. About 186,000 new cases of the disease were diagnosed in the US in 2008, and it is estimated that just over 1.8 million American men are currently survivors of this difficult condition.
