A ogni expedition pubblica su Instagram foto scattate con una macchina fotografica Nikon, simbolo importante nella sua vita come lo è stato in quella di sua moglie Sara. È osservando una foto che scopre la macchia sopra il golfo di Taranto, una malattia, forse dovrebbe avvertire qualcuno, ma nella sua testa ormai c'è solo il desiderio di colmare la distanza tra sé e casa. Un incidente, tuttavia, gli impedirà di partire, e il passato che l'ha spinto a lasciare la Terra inizierà a tormentarlo. Cercherà in Controllo Missione un punto di riferimento su cui riporre tutte le sue speranze, ma è presto per abbandonare la Stazione, prima deve affrontare l'ultima camminata spaziale, e imparare a lasciar andare qualcosa... Scritto in un'originale seconda persona, la narrazione procede spasmodica tra attività extraveicolari e comunicati radio. Space Oddity non è un racconto di fantascienza, perché tratta con realismo e concretezza lo spazio in cui è ambienta la vicenda. Si tratta di un esplorazione, quella della Stazione Spaziale Internazionale, ma anche, e soprattutto, di un viaggio introspettivo nella muta vastità del cosmo.
