Alex Johnstone is trouble. T-R-O-U-B-L-E as former elementary spelling bee champ Emily Cooper would say. Emily is haunted by her young success--being the first regional Scripps Spelling Bee winner from her small town of Wraith, Virginia, made her famous as a child. Choking up on the final word, costing herself and her tiny town the nationals title is a memory that hasn't left her since. Now a high school junior, she still can't escape whispered rumors. Her parents, which were always fighting, have seem to hit their final straw. There's a lot of pressure to go to an Ivy League and make her town proud. To top it off, she has one more problem. And he wears a leather jacket.
Enter Alex. All 6'2 of him seems bent on not passing his classes. He knows his fate. Graduate high school to avoid trouble from the law, then take over the family business. The Johnstones run an illicit drug empire, the only one of its kind in Charlottesville. Alex Johnstone has been sent to a tiny town to finish his education, staying out of sight of the people who want his father--and by extension himself-- dead. But Alex doesn't want to be good. He doesn't want to stay out of trouble. And he definitely doesn't want a brunette know-it-all in his business. Not even a former spelling bee champ.
