The one's who in one point of their life killed one of the strongest beast in the land and lived to tell the tale, in doing so they gained great power and served the late High King Atwood on his council of advisors or at least they did. When the king was murdered eight hundred years ago the five were blamed and they fled to different parts of the world, and have stayed that way for decades.
