A ribbon of energy in space, in which time doesn't seem to pass. James T. Kirk, Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-A, disappears into this phenomenon during the christening of the U.S.S. Enterprise, NCC-1701-B. Captain Spock, following his death in the alternate timeline he entered after being lost in a black hole while trying to save the Romulan home world, wakes up in a strange world called Nexus. He learns that his captain had been here, and sets off to find him.

Spock and Jim have beamed down to a deserted planet to gather a crystal (which has hallucinatory effects, making you have vivid flashbacks to traumatic events in your past). On their way back to the ship, they find out the transporter is broken and their radios are being messed up from the everlasting storm that circles the planet. They have to make do for week with only themselves and their tragic pasts. Trigger warning. If you suffer from PTSD or are 'triggered' easily I would suggest avoiding this book. Thanks. Kirk uses the computer to create a document that charts his interactions with Spock, who he is very much in love with. Kirk has decided that Spock doesn't love him. He gets the sads. But his conclusion is entirely false.

Jim Kirk gets shot by an automated weapon while on an away misson. Instead of injuring or killing him, it deages him. Now Spock and McCoy have to try and fix it, all while caring for 4 year old Jim. This is made harder by the fact that he is terrified of everyone but Spock. The more they watch and listen, the more Spock and McCoy want to find Winona Kirk and make her just as afraid as she has made her son. There is a brief nudity scene in the last chapter. All characters involved in said scene are adults. There are some sexual terms used. However, I do not believe it is enough to change the rating to mature.

Jim breathed, in and out and in and out and in again, and finally straightened, shoulders back and head lifting to face the cabin window that looked out into the far-reaching expanse of space. Stars pricked, fading and brightening once more, and Jim's voice was a low murmur when he eventually ordered: "Computer, send a message to Commander Spock. Ask that he meet me in the ready room in ten minutes-there's been a change in plans for our next assignment." * Jim is sent back to Tarsus IV.
