When Jess Mariano arrives in Stars Hollow, he already has a reputation: sarcastic, angry, impossible to handle. Most people keep their distance.
Shari Bennett doesn't.
Sweet, soft-spoken, and painfully well-behaved, Shari is everything Jess claims to hate. She spends lunches in the library, gets straight A's without trying, and has never broken a rule in her life. Everyone at Stars Hollow High sees her as innocent - the girl too nice for her own good.
Their friendship starts unexpectedly after she catches him reading in the back of the school courtyard instead of sitting in assembly. Instead of lecturing him, she sits beside him and asks about the book in his hands. Jess is irritated by how easy she is to talk to. Shari is fascinated by someone who says exactly what he thinks without caring who approves.
Slowly, they become inseparable.
She starts spending afternoons at Luke's just to argue with him over music and novels. He walks her home after town movie nights even when they've spent the entire evening teasing each other. They trade books filled with handwritten notes in the margins. Jess teaches her how to stop worrying about disappointing everyone around her, while Shari becomes the only person who can calm the anger he carries everywhere.
And somewhere between late-night diner coffee, stolen car rides, and sitting shoulder-to-shoulder under the stars outside town... friendship turns into something neither of them knows how to handle.
Especially Shari.
With Jess, she feels fearless.
And Jess - who's spent his whole life believing people eventually leave him - starts falling for the one girl who stayed.
The problem is everyone else can see it too.
