Everyone knows not to be outside once the sun goes down if they want to avoid the werewolves. Therron Chase has always been afraid of the wolves, so much so, that he makes sure to give himself more than an hour to get home from work. One evening, however, his car has a flat and he is forced to try to make it home on foot. He ends up outside after dark for the first time in a long time-but that's when the truth is learned. Werewolves are closer to you than you might think. Enter Sheriff Dan Barkas who has werewolf troubles of his own.

A young teenage girl, haunted by the memories of her father's execution, attempts to escape a cruel regime by night. A solitary woman, abandoned by her husband, inadvertently plays into the cruel hands of 'the state'. In another totalitarian regime a traffic light fixer is dealt with brutally for admiring a sunset. All these characters capture the essence of what it's like to be disempowered and cruelly dehumanised at the hands of a heinous, corrupt power. This sharp collection of pertinent short stories throws an at times uncomfortable light on cruelty, injustice and persecution that is all too relevant today. But ultimately these stories celebrate the strength and determination to survive at all costs, that exists within all of us.

An engineer, a philology student, an old Afghan veteran, a history teacher - all of them are overtaken by the same knock at the door. The State Machine sets its conveyor belt in motion: a draft notice, a medical commission, a training camp, a freight wagon, a trench, a stray shell fragment, a death notice. At every stage people become figures, and figures become accounts. Suddenly Mortal is a novella about the mechanics of dehumanization. About logistics in which bandages run out faster than soldiers. About heroism that turns out to be nothing more than a bookkeeping entry. And about a book that remains when the people have burned. Written in a grotesque, tragicomic manner, with epigraphs from Nietzsche to Brodsky and an intonation that echoes Bulgakov's satire, the novella asks a single question: what do you do when the Machine switches into sleep mode until the next cycle - while the dead ring out louder than any hymns?
