Baron von Brickelstein is the world-renowned yet profoundly lonely Grand Marshal of the Kingdom of Eidelmark. Princess Regina, the recklessly cavalier heiress to the throne of neighboring Rochevaux, leads a double-life as a jewel thief. Both are at the top of their chosen professions, but seemingly with nothing in common otherwise. Brickelstein's life-changing encounter with Regina is cut short when Eidelmark's national treasure, the Eidelstein necklace, is stolen right off his queen's neck. When he discovers that the thief is none other than Regina, he must pursue her all over the world to bring her to justice. Yet despite their being on opposite sides of the law and evenly matched adversaries, the ordeal of the chase changes both of them and neither can put aside their feelings for the other-forcing Brickelstein into the agonizing choice between duty and love. The Eidelstein's return becomes even more urgent when its theft sparks a devastating war and exacts a catastrophic toll on Regina's loved ones. With Brickelstein's global dragnet bearing down on her-and unable to return the necklace even though she wants to-Regina finds herself banished, alone, and a fugitive.

Alexandrea Lionheart, a exceptional soldier, finds herself impressing the local royalty enough to make her the first princess' personal guard (on direct request). While charismatic and quite the mage, she is hopelessly terrible at diplomacy, subterfuge, and making the correct but difficult calls. Can Alexandrea prepare the princess in time?
