Eddie Munson is the known as the freak of Hawkins High. For many reasons, but the main one is that he is openly gay. Eddie never told anyone on purpose, but he got really high at a party one day and let it slip to one of the jocks. Even though he became a pariah at school, a certain golden boy can't keep Eddie out of his head. Steve can't help but want to be near Eddie. Which is why he asks Eddie if he can join Hellfire.
