The story is told from Max's point of view, and we see what goes on behind the four walls of the Mayfield/Hangrove house. The story is set in 1985, before Billy's death. Max, a 15-year-old girl who faces terrible situations within her own family, finds herself keeping this secret for fear of the consequences. Her friends try to help her as much as possible.
