Vivienne Claire-Vada Monroe was a fancy girl. She did not play dungeons and dragons, she did not play flashlight tag in the woods at night, she did not climb onto the roof for fun, and she did not ride her bike without brakes. Yet, somehow, her friends did all of those things. Micheal Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, Dustin Henderson and Will Byers were Vivienne's best friends, and they had been for years beforehand. In the later years, Vivienne learned that mike wheeler was in love with her, but so was someone else. While fighting killing monsters from a board game, she tries to pick who to love and who to hurt. In the end, it might just come down to who knows her favourite song.

The story is told from Max's point of view, and we see what goes on behind the four walls of the Mayfield/Hangrove house. The story is set in 1985, before Billy's death. Max, a 15-year-old girl who faces terrible situations within her own family, finds herself keeping this secret for fear of the consequences. Her friends try to help her as much as possible.
