I can almost hear his disapproval now. This isn't somewhere he'd want me to be. But he's dead. My left knee bounces up and down quickly, nervously, as I wait. "Rose Adley?" Her tone resembles a statement more than a question. A woman with a severe, angular face watches me expectantly, holding the dark oak wood door of her office open for me. I rise from my seat, following her into the small room. "Everyone calls me Ro," I rush out, making sure I don't chicken out at the last moment. She steps closer to me. Maybe to intimidate me, but I can't see her exact expression through my ever blurring eyes. "So, Ro, what do you have to offer us?" Again, the woman makes it more of a statement than a question. I pause, to think about it. and there's nothing. Nothing I can offer her. The defeat of this thought, burned into my brain since the end of the war, suddenly became a promise.
