Violet stood shivering as her now soaked gown clung to her wet skin. "Your plan will not work." She insisted to the Captain's retreating frame. He whipped around to face her, his expression stormy, daring her to explain. Violet wrapped her arms tightly around herself as her lips started to turn blue, but she raised her chin in defiance and continued. "He will not chase you into a trap, he has want only of a wife, my father will offer him my sister Grace instead and you will get nothing." The Captain was silent for so long that she started to believe he had not heard her. She could feel the eyes of the crew upon her, but they were nothing compared to the crushing weight of the Captain's intense gaze. He took a few menacing steps toward her stopping only when they were inches apart and Violet had to crane her neck back to look at him. Though they were close he spoke loud enough for the crew to hear, "has he seen you?" Violet blinked at him, not understanding, his voice took on a harder edge and he repeated the question. "Your future husband the Earl, has he laid his eyes upon you?" "Y-yes." Violet stammered as the icy wind picked up around them. Only then did the Captain step back, a smug look on his face. Jessica's a piece of work, she really is, and people just seem to put up with her- she's not ever royalty, but it looked like she was getting there one way or another. She was marrying Xavier, a real prince who's way to good for her, but he has to find someone else if he wants to even try to convince his parents, the king and queen that he isn't going to marry a witch. Does he find someone? Well, he has to be "Exposed the Rivalry" somehow...

This is a short story I wrote for my final paper in my philosophy of evil class! We had to create our own society and illustrate how evil is conceptualized within it. I based my society on the biological mechanisms of Celiac disease, which I have. Basically, gluten triggers an immune response when consumed. The immune system perceives gluten as a threat and attacks it and the wall of the small intestine. This damages the wall and the digestive system's ability to properly absorb nutrients, which can have lasting effects on the body. In addition, the damaged wall leaves an opening that allows more gluten to enter and sustain this positive feedback loop. There's a lot of fancy science jargon to explain all that, but essentially that response cycle is what I used as the basis for my society. Enjoy!
