Subcontinent Stories

The 'Saas' Diaries is a series of short stories dedicated to Desi Mother-in-law encounters. The stories take inspiration from several real-life experiences and other data such as written works and Television shows portraying the influential role of the "Saas" (Mother-in-law) in sub-continental households. The series is not limited to sub-continental stories and I welcome additions to it from other parts of the world. A story based on the internal conflicts of power between a few household women. Based in the post-partition era, a tale of subjugation and domination.

Faarah lives a hard life. Thinking about the hardships her mother had been daily facing her whole life and still faces to keep her daughter's stomach full makes her as forlorn as one can be. She is seventeen but her mother, Leila, refuses to let her beloved daughter work. They live in harsh environment but that may not last long for Faarah if her mother does what she has been thinking. She only wants Faarah's life to be a better one than the one she has been living. 'La'l meri' means 'My red diamond'.

This story is meant to create an awareness about abusive marriages and how societies in Indian subcontinent react to it. Hoping for change and freedom for all.
