In 1882, Doctor Jane Barber has no shortage of problems. From being scrutinised at work for her gender, judged for her youth, and undermined by society as a whole, shes had quite enough. The Boer War was a traumatic experience on its own, but on top of that, Jane now has to find accommodation in London on her own- as the years she should've spent meeting a man and settling down, she spent in a trench tending to wounds. Detective Inspector Arthur Murphy is in need of a roommate. His last was too whiny, the one before that too loud. Another whistled too much, and a brief encounter with one man's dog was enough for Arthur to evict him immediately. When his sister Ada finally puts her foot down, and finds him a roommate herself. Which is how Arthur comes home one day to find his new roommate: a woman. If the Boer War was explosive, Jane and Arthur sharing a shabby flat in London is practically a world war. Spilled tea, scattered case files, and one meddling doctor who won't stop tidying his desk. Arthur nearly kills Jane. Jane nearly kills Arthur. And no, for the last time, as they have to tell many people, they are not married. | Work In Progress Story | Updates multiple times a week | Will become a series once this book is complete | Please vote and comment | | The Detective & The Doctor playlist | https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3LiwNQoyLA2QkOR5N8Edcy?si=u9uaOykYTie1unEbjxRWhQ&pi=bWLjxklLTb-qT

Her sister Grace is graceful. And beautiful and charming and witty. Felicity however lacks all that and her own namesake; happiness. Overshadowed and taunted by her twin sister her entire life, Felicity yearns to escape to a world where she can excel. That world exists. The only problem is that it belongs to men. The year is 1901 and women will not be allowed to practise law for another eighteen years. They face crippling inequality before the courts and lack any form of political power to change that. Desperate to make a difference and find her true calling, Felicity leaves her life as a gaunt and undesirable bluestocking and, with the help of her older brother, becomes Felix, a first year law student at Cambridge. She had given up all hope of ever finding love. Who could love a skinny intellectual like herself? So sure was she, Felicity was willing to sacrifice any future possibility in order to live as Felix and make a change. But as the term progresses, Felicity begins to consider whether she may have been too hasty in her decision. An historical fiction novel documenting one woman’s extraordinary effort to make her mark in what was solely a man’s world, trying to find felicity in freedom and love.

Short Story~ I entered this story for the BBC Radio 2 500 words writing competition here in the UK. I was one of the 25 finalists in my age group out of a 125,000 that entered. I had to go down to London, in Shakespeare's Globe for the results. I got to meet celebrities like: Julie Walters, Tom Hiddleston, Warwick Davis, Raleigh Ritchie, Nick Jones, Chris Evans (radio presenter) and many more! Unfortunately I was not a winner, but still got a shout out. I thought that it would be a nice idea to share the story with you guys, you can also go to the BBC Radio 2 500 words website to find out more about the day! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00rfvk1 Look out for the name Emily Baxter (that's me!) I really hope you enjoy my story!! Cover by: @evbax01

Lucky, i dont know why im writing this because this will never have to face the abuse and strain i had to cope with before i took my wise decision. A suffragette is no profession for a child, let alone a manipulative one. I cant help it that i HATE you; why couldn't you have stayed the same and not stood out? You ruined our reputation- well mine now! My money is only a tool, it is not super glue to fix Dumb Lucky Johnson's ignorant offences!!! Your name is a shield, your heart is your enemy, your breath is fast but will slow down- my reputation is gone and its ALL down to you!! Only MY reputation; YOU are dead to me now! From Dad
