In 1882, Doctor Jane Barber has no shortage of problems. From being scrutinised at work for her gender, judged for her youth, and undermined by society as a whole, shes had quite enough. The Boer War was a traumatic experience on its own, but on top of that, Jane now has to find accommodation in London on her own- as the years she should've spent meeting a man and settling down, she spent in a trench tending to wounds. Detective Inspector Arthur Murphy is in need of a roommate. His last was too whiny, the one before that too loud. Another whistled too much, and a brief encounter with one man's dog was enough for Arthur to evict him immediately. When his sister Ada finally puts her foot down, and finds him a roommate herself. Which is how Arthur comes home one day to find his new roommate: a woman. If the Boer War was explosive, Jane and Arthur sharing a shabby flat in London is practically a world war. Spilled tea, scattered case files, and one meddling doctor who won't stop tidying his desk. Arthur nearly kills Jane. Jane nearly kills Arthur. And no, for the last time, as they have to tell many people, they are not married. | Work In Progress Story | Updates multiple times a week | Will become a series once this book is complete | Please vote and comment | | The Detective & The Doctor playlist | https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3LiwNQoyLA2QkOR5N8Edcy?si=u9uaOykYTie1unEbjxRWhQ&pi=bWLjxklLTb-qT

Selina, who is heavily pregnant, her husband Sebastian, a dock worker and her three children, Edward, Lottie and Beatrice. Virginia, Selina and Sarah-Ann work locally at the Bryant and May matchbox factory in Bow. Brutally supervised by Harland Beazley the women of the matchbox factory are scrupulously controlled to the point of fear. One step out of line, a matchbox dropped, the wrong or not footwear would see a worker fined half a days wage. To make ends meat Ginny involves Edward, Lottie and Beatrice in the matchbox making process at her home. But when a newspaper reports on the working conditions for the women at the factory, Ginny spots an opportunity and realises a deep embedded ambition to fight the powers that be. Ginny is faced with crippling fines and fears her eldest daughter may be falling foul of the common lines, 'Phossy'. Ginny fights against the male dominated society the only way she can, secretly in liaison with the newspaper.

"It's not right that we should have to fight for something so obviously right and just as having the vote but we must. Someone must!" Lady Anastasia Banks has lived her entire life thus far in a world where she may do as she likes, be it running around the countryside with her cousins or sitting quietly in a secluded corner, immersed in a book about the flora and fauna of her home county of Kent. But with her 'coming out' only a year away, Anastasia gradually realises her future will be quite different. And she's not sure if she'll like it. Thrust into the world of Edwardian high society and faced with an impossible choice, Anastasia comes to see that perhaps life isn't so simple and fair as she once thought. In her frustration, she comes across a group of ladies who promise to help her... to help all women.

Short Story~ I entered this story for the BBC Radio 2 500 words writing competition here in the UK. I was one of the 25 finalists in my age group out of a 125,000 that entered. I had to go down to London, in Shakespeare's Globe for the results. I got to meet celebrities like: Julie Walters, Tom Hiddleston, Warwick Davis, Raleigh Ritchie, Nick Jones, Chris Evans (radio presenter) and many more!
