Summer it's meant to be the best season but Emily never saw it that way, she thinks it's overrated. But this summer is different. Emily is faced with two boys who have fallen for her and all her friends have told her there deepest secrets that she has been trusted to keep. She learned early that animals listened to her. Not in the way people listened-half-distracted, already preparing their response-but in a deeper, older way. A way that felt like still water after a storm. As a child, she was the one called when a dog refused to be leashed, when a barn cat went feral with fear, when a horse trembled and rolled its eyes white at the edge of panic. She would kneel, or stand quietly, or simply exist nearby, and the chaos would soften. Muscles loosened. Breaths slowed. Even the wild ones-hawks caught in netting, seals stranded on shore, a bull shark circling too close to swimmers-responded as though she'd spoken a language no human remembered teaching. No animal ever hurt her. Not once. She never carried the small scars other children did: no cat scratches tracing her wrists, no dog bites on her calves, no swollen welts from bees or wasps. In summer, insects landed on her skin and lifted off again, gentle, unafraid. Horses lowered their heads for her. Snakes slid past her bare feet without striking. The sea itself seemed to quiet when she entered it, waves settling as if recognizing her weight. Animals didn't just trust her. They yielded. But to her, it never felt like power. It was simply how things were. Like having steady hands. Like knowing which way was north without checking the sky. She assumed everyone felt this closeness, this calm, and that animals were merely misunderstood-reacting to fear, to noise, to the sharp edges of human impatience. It wasn't until much later, when someone else tried to do what she did and failed spectacularly, that she began to realize the truth. The world was loud to animals. And she was not.
