Summer, 1967: the Summer Of Love. Mary Caroline Kildare's head is still reeling from the death of her best friend four months before. Caroline is tired of the superficialness and anarchy of it all and spends much of her time alone. She has fallen out of her relationship with God and man alike, but still longs for companionship. Her prayers are answered when the handsome, sweet, all American boy, Jimmy Romano, strolls into her Malt Shop late one night and makes her believe in love and happiness again. She is convinced that God sent Jimmy as an angel to save her, but then the world comes in and crosses their stars. Caroline begs God for a sign that he is good and isn't abandoning the world, but he seems to be silent. In order to find consolation, she must find her place in her changing world and fight to make things as right as they can be.
